If you transfer a file of 1GB in a USB Flash drive, it will take approximately 1 or 2 minutes. But if you transfer 2000 files with the combined size of 1GB, it will take up to 5 minutes. If number of files are large, time required to transfer files will increase drastically.
There are two ways to handle this situation:
- Compress your files so they become a single file. Problem with this solution is that if number of files are in thousands, compression itself will take lots of time. Also, you will always require an extracting software to get your files back.
- “Store” your files in a single “self extracting” file and transfer it to USB or other media. I found this solution best because storing files in a single file takes very little time (as it doesn’t compress files) and with self extracting feature, you will not need any software to get your files back. However, you WILL need WinRAR to “Store” files and create “self-extracting” file.
Here is the step by step process for doing this:
Download and install WinRAR. I am sure most of you have already installed WinRAR.
Right click at the folder which includes files you want to store. Click at “Add to archive”.
WinRAR will launched. You need to select “Store” from “Compression method” combo list. Also, make sure you have checked “Create SFX archive”.
Click OK button. WinRAR will now create a self-extracting file. This process will finish quickly as storing files in a single file is easy compared to compressing files.
